Lauren Braithwaite is a senior, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Digital Media and Journalism. At John Jay, Braithwaite is a member of the Political Science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha, and has worked on a political campaign.
Braithwaite was a Just Media Fellow for Spring 2023. She worked as a reporter on criminal justice related issues.
In her sophomore year, she was a writer for the Sentinel, where she wrote two stories for the newspaper. This motivated her to become Managing Editor last year, where she was able to spearhead the publication of stories that investigated club life on campus and the closure of one of the college’s departments. Her favorite story for the Sentinel is when she reported on the Department of Communications and Theater Arts closing. This story is close to her heart because she was able to educate students on a matter that they felt confused on.

“It is a good lesson - though it may often be a hard one - for a man... to step aside out of the narrow circle in which his claims are recognized, and to find how utterly devoid of significance, beyond that circle, is all that he achieves, and all he aims at.”Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter
The world is like an ocean in which we are all small fish, hoping to claim the rank of a whale. Some may succeed and others won’t come close, but humility in our efforts is paramount. If one person remembers and is pleased by something we did, then we have accomplished everything.
