Umaima Ali, Web Editor
Umaima Ali is currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelor’s in Criminology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice with two minors in Cybercrime and Middle East studies. Ali worked for the Sentinel previously as a staff writer. Ali has won awards in recognition of her writing, including the 2022 Excellence in Journalism award from the Herald Newspaper. She is also a self published author currently selling on Amazon, showcasing her poetry.
Although writing has been her passion, it intertwines with many other interests. She has involved herself with the ePortfolio program by being a Junior eTern at John Jay, giving her the opportunity to improve her digital literacy. Ali is also in the Interdisciplinary Program at John Jay College, which has explored her writing with a variety of genres. She plans on embarking on her academic journey by taking writing-intensive courses during her time at John Jay. Her goal is to expand her knowledge and land a position in a law enforcement agency.
A quote that inspires Ali is “There is little that can withstand a man who can conquer himself” by Louis XIV. It resonates with many moments of weakness Umaima has had in the past and overcame them by learning from her own faults. It certainly gave her the strength to fight her battles.
“Morning to Nights, Ramadan At John Jay College” was one of Umaima’s favorite stories on the Sentinel website because not only did she write this article, it was the first informative writing piece she’s written for the Sentinel. Umaima believes it is a great way for other’s stories to be heard, especially the Muslim community.
