The effects of using Facebook on people’s relationships

As if relationships needed more complications; now there is another reason for breakups and messy fights, thanks to Facebook.com. The use of Facebook can be beneficial and help expand people’s networks, but it can also cause multiple problems especially among personal relationships. Facebook has become very popular and it’s been used by a large number of people.

“Facebook is good to meet new people and for mingling, especially to stay in touch with your friends,” said Idelsa Rodriguez, a John Jay College student. “I have lost many friends and a boyfriend thanks to Facebook, because of gossip and negative comments that were created,” said Perla Santos. There are some that argue that in reality is the person’s responsibility to control and use Facebook with moderation. “I have been a Facebook member since 2009 and I have never had any problems with any one, I think that if you use it with the right intentions it is harmless and more beneficial to expand your network,” said Jasmine Hernandez.

Many users feel that Facebook can impact your relationships negatively and there are many that argue that it can be a good thing. “I love Facebook, I have reconnected with so many classmates from middle school and since is international I even stay in touch with my family in Central America,” said Dialena Diaz. Facebook has been created with the idea to be fun and beneficial not a place to expose its users. “This has been the most creative creation, thanks to Facebook I was able to reconnect with people that I though I will never hear from again,” said James Florencio, a student at Bronx Community College.

”The fact is, our privacy hangs in the balance every time we go online, we have to be very careful with what and how we write things especially if you are in a relationship,” said Crystal Curtis, employee of John Jay College Day Center. “People tend to reconnect with their past relationships, which jeopardizes with their current relationship at the same time you can meet new people and become interested in someone else and decide to leave you boyfriend or girlfriend for the new person you just met in Facebook,” said Jelissa Pena, a student at John Jay College. Relationships are usually put in jeopardy but this can increase once the person creates a Facebook profile and puts a “single” status instead of their real status “in a relationship”. Can you imagine your boyfriend or girlfriend having an account without your knowledge? “My ex-boyfriend and I had been dating for almost 1 year when one of my friends told me that he had a Facebook account, I could not believe it but it was true and to make matters worse he had that he was “single” in his profile,” said Monica Moore, a student at Bronx Community College. “My friend has an account and saw his name in one of her other friend’s blog, I ended up creating an account to make sure it was not a mistake and it was him,” said Monica. “There is no respect some girls don’t really care if the guy is in a relationship, they still comment in their pictures thing like “you are so hot” or “you can hit me up whenever you want” this girls are just crazy,” added Monica.

There are some people that simply join the social networking world because they see it as a trend and want to be part of it. Following trends may not work for every one, and it may lead to chaos in their personal lives. “In reality I started to use Facebook because all my friends were using it, so I wanted to be part of it, but I soon realized that it was a waste of time and it created problems with my girlfriend,” said Luis Fuentes, a student. “She was constantly competing against my other female friends for my attention and it showed me how insecure she really was, it was big turn off for me,” said Luis Fuentes.

Facebook can be good for some but it can also be very negative for others. It all depends on how you control the usage, and its good to have a notion of protecting your privacy. The usage should be fun and helpful instead of dramatic and chaotic.

Bloodhounds on their way up

NEW YORK - APRIL 16: CC Sabathia #52 of the N...

This season, the Bloodhounds finished with an even .500 record in conference play, with five wins and five losses, but don’t let the record deceive you; this team is on its way up. This record was achieved with many younger players on the team. Some of the players that were a factor in this year’s third place finish will be eligible to come back. What makes that a key component of the potential resurgence is that these players are young and stand to only get better with experience. A big part of the youth movement was freshmen pitchers Braylin Perez and Mark Marte.
Pitcher Perez pitched ten strong innings in John Jay’s upset win over Baruch in the CUNYAC tournament, highlighting a season where he got better throughout the year. He lost his first conference start in a game against Yeshiva University, where he gave up nine hits and five runs in five innings pitched in what turned out to be a six to four loss for the Bloodhounds. However, he showed a glimmer of hope striking out eight of the batters he faced. During his next start he received a no decision in the Bloodhounds eight to six win against Baruch. Perez threw five and a third innings and struck out six. His next two games showed his potential to become the staff ace as he pitched two complete games and got the win in each. Finally in the CUNYAC he pitched an incredible ten innings in John Jay’s win over Baruch. Using the game score method used by Major League Baseball, which starts with an average score of 50 and uses a formula to judge a pitchers performance, with higher being better, he scored a 66.
To put his performance against the conference into perspective, the use of FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) can help. FIP measures variables that the pitcher controls, such as home runs allowed, walks allowed, and strikeouts, to measure how effective he was on his own. Should a FIP be higher than a pitchers ERA (Earned Run Average, how many earned runs he gives up for every nine innings), it generally means that his defense made him look better than he was. For example Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia’s current ERA is 2.89, an incredible number, however his FIP is 2.84, meaning he’s pitching slightly better than his defense is playing. Braylin had an ERA of 4.02, but his FIP was a 3.97, meaning he slightly outplayed his defense. The best part of this: he’s only a freshman. With experience, he is bound to find better control of his pitches, leading to less walks, less hits, and ultimately less runs allowed.
Mark Marte, another freshman, put up excellent numbers for a freshman, though most came out of play. He made seven appearances during the season and posted a 4.75 ERA, however his FIP was a 4.06. Like his freshman counterpart Perez, he struggled with giving up too many walks. Similar to his counterpart, he has room to grow into a dominant pitcher.
In collegiate athletics, teams are at their strongest when they have a core of experienced players. The Bloodhounds this year discovered some of the cornerstones of what could be the strongest team in the CUNYAC of the future.
Next year The Bloodhounds have some solid players that under normal circumstances stand to only get better. With their improvement, Head Coach Dan Palumbo stands to lead a squad that is ready to contend for a CUNY title, and bring John Jay home another trophy to add to its already impressive list.

Soup Kitchen

“I eat from the garbage cans. McDonalds throws out a lot,” said Joseph McCore, 52. McCore eats in St.Paul Apostle’s “Fish&Loaves Soup Kitchen” when it opens every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30am.
Different types of people come out to volunteer in the soup kitchen, according to Kathleen McGarth, 83, a long time volunteer. “Young executives from wall street, young people from offices, and retired professionals.” Her favorite volunteers, she said, were John Jay students. “I gave everybody (the students) a job, and they are really hardworking.”
John Jay students that volunteer are usually sent from Community Outreach. “Representatives also work there in order to fulfill their AmeriCorps hours,” said Ashley Current, Coordinator of Community Outreach. “We not only send volunteers, we also gave them canned foods.” Programs such as Hunger buffet (2009 and 2010) and others have raised donations for the church’s soup kitchen.
Not everyone being served in the soup kitchen is homeless or in dire need of food. George Bahna, 59 years old, for example, is not homeless and has a home and family that he can go to. He is a retired toll collector. The reason he said that he comes to eat there is because it is “very convenient, you don’t have to cook and don’t have to clean.”
McGarth herself is a retired waitress and has been volunteering for over thirty years. People that came to eat when I was there was always over sixty. There are six tables each with 10 seats and still the place becomes overcrowded, with little space and even less food toward the end of the service. Sometimes when seconds are called there is hardly enough food and there are newcomers coming through the front door waiting for their chance to eat.
Going to volunteer is simple, only a couple of doors down from North Hall is the soup kitchen. Ring the doorbell and tell the secretary at the desk that you are there to volunteer. The secretary will direct you to the soup kitchen. It opens from 9am for people who want to volunteer.
McGarth helps organize the soup kitchen and assigns volunteers their jobs. A volunteer job could be anything from sorting one type of bread from another, cleaning dishes, throwing out trash, and anything else that is necessary for the service.
I volunteered April 14, throughout spring break, and April 28. Volunteers are outfitted with a cap and apron that both have a fish and loaf designed on it. On the first day after donning my uniform I helped lay out utensils for the people that would come and eat at 11:30am.
On April 19 I sorted bread, put rolls of bread into one bag, hero bread in another, and bagels in another. On April 21, I cleaned out the refrigerators in the kitchen on the lower level. On April 28th I laid out desserts for the service, did the same thing with the rolls of bread, and helped transport food from whole foods to the church.
During service a volunteer could be serving refreshments, fish, chicken, rolls of bread, sandwiches, salad, and of course soup. Some days like my first day, I served refreshments such as coffee and tea. On other days I gave out bags of food for the people to take home. The church gets donations from Whole Foods and church parishioners.
McCore is currently homeless and right now this is the only reliable source of food. On other days he finds ways to survive. “I eat in Chinatown, you can eat there for a dollar. Not that bad, better than nothing.” Other times he eats out of the trash.
McCore was never on illegal drugs. Alcohol is the reason he is homeless. He used to work in a kitchen storage room in charge of the alcohol. From there he started drinking. Then he would use a majority of his salary to buy more alcohol. He became an alcoholic. “That’s why I’m on the street,” McCore said.
He eventually went to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and then to rehab. He has been sober for over15 years. He appreciates the Soup Kitchen for what it is providing for him. “I’m glad that we have a soup kitchen.”
People volunteer at the soup kitchen for different reasons. “This is where I feel most at home. I want to be with real people,” said McGarth. She also said that after service, “you feel very fulfilled, and you feel tired but it is a nice tired.”

Uproar Over Honorary Degree for Kushner

NEW YORK, NY - JUNE 05: Playwright Tony Kushn...

By Norhan Basuni

In what was considered to be a rare move, on May 2, 2011, for the first time in 40 years in the history of the City University of New York (CUNY), the CUNY Board of Trustees (BOT) tabled a nomination for an honorary degree.
Jeffrey S. Wiesenfeld, member of CUNY’s Board of Trustees, vetoed the candidacy of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner with many objections. At the May 2nd board meeting, Wiesenfeld delivered a 900-word speech, which he devoted to demonstrating to the rest of the board that Kushner’s political viewpoints towards the State of Israel are larger than his candidacy for an honorary degree.
Wiesenfeld pleaded to the board that “there is a lot of disingenuous and non-intellectual activity directed against the State of Israel on campuses throughout the country!”
Wiesenfeld strongly felt that honoring Kushner would “denigrate this [CUNY] university.” Shortly after, Wiesenfeld voted to shelve the honorary degree nominating Kushner, asserting that he is an “extremist” antagonist and critic of Israel. Kushner’s name was then singled out and tabled by the board while the remaining 2011 CUNY commencement honorary degrees were approved. Since the board’s next meeting was not until June 27, weeks after John Jay’s June 3 commencement ceremony it would have been too late to award Kushner with an honorary degree. This news was not met lightly and ignited many faculty members, students and Kushner supporters to protest against the “outrageous” outcome of the board’s decision. Some John Jay students such as Cathyrn Weber, an International Crime Justice junior and Secretary of John Jay’s United Nations Students Association, found themselves feeling unsettled by the decision of the board.
Weber stated, “I just don’t understand how the Board of Trustees can dismiss Tony Kushner’s brilliance simply based on his opinion of the Israeli government, which I must add he is entitled too. What an embarrassment to one of the most diverse institutions of higher education.”
The controversy of Kushner’s dismissal as a 2011 honorary degree candidate sparked national attention. On the evening of May 9, 2011 a special meeting was called to order when the Executive Committee of the Board reversed the original decision of the Board of Trustees with a unanimous vote in favor of awarding Kushner an honorary degree at this year’s commencement. The special meeting lasted about twenty minutes where protestors waited anxiously outside CUNY’s Upper East Side headquarters. During a press meeting following the adjournment of the special meeting of the Executive Committee, Matthew Goldstein, CUNY Chancellor, confirmed in an interview with the Sentinel, “I will be reaching out to Tony Kushner myself after tonight’s meeting.”
Naomi Brussel, Jewish-American supporter of Kushner and a member of the Activist Response Team, was one of the many people who was incredibly displeased with the original decision of the board and had no intention on being silent about her opinion. “Tony Kushner is critical of the Israeli government but that is intellectual freedom,” she then added, “as a Jew I feel that I have to be more in support of Tony Kushner because this situation represents me. The Board of Trustees is frightened. They are afraid of supporting anyone who speaks out against the Zionist lobby because it could get them in trouble. Today’s meeting is all about saving face at this point because much of the damage has already been done.”
Barbara Bowen, who is the President of the Professional Staff Congress (PSC) at CUNY and English Professor at Queens College and the Graduate Center of CUNY, said, “I was outraged! Tony Kushner spent his professional life speaking out against injustice and now here he is the victim of injustice by our Board of Trustees.”
After the special meeting was over Bowen added that while Kushner’s nomination should have been approved from the beginning she feels this doesn’t change the fact that “Tony Kushner’s name was disrespected when his honorary degree candidacy was tabled by the Board of Trustees and even more so when no one spoke in his defense.”
Andrea Vasquez, Executive Committee Member of the Professional Staff Congress (PSC), was happy with the “tremendous outpouring of support for Tony Kushner.” However, even after the reversal of Kushner’s status as an honorary degree recipient at John Jay’s 2011 commencement, Wiesenfeld’s position stood on shaky grounds as Kushner’s fuming supporters demanded for Wiesenfeld’s immediate resignation. While perhaps Wiesenfeld felt as though he was voicing the unison voice of the Jews at CUNY, there were no supporters of Wieseneld’s initial decision present at the special Executive Committee meeting on May 9.
Wiesenfeld claims that honoring Kushner would place CUNY’s Jewish population in an unfavorable situation, however Elimelech Lublin, a Political Science senior at John Jay and Treasurer of the Hillel Club said, “I personally do not agree with Tony Kushner’s political viewpoints about Israel but at the same time this [CUNY] is a University where all opinions should be respected.” Lubin continued, “As a Jew I am not offended at all by John Jay nominating Tony Kushner for an honorary degree at the 2011 commencement.”
Despite the reversal of the board’s original decision and Kushner accepting the honorary degree at John Jay’s 2011 commencement, several faculty members at John Jay felt that the special meeting was missing something. Co-nominators of Tony Kushner’s honorary degree, Professor Amy Green and Visiting Professor Michael Meeropol, an economist, both felt that by rejecting Kushner’s candidacy, the Board had not only maligned Kushner without just cause, but had disrespected the faculty of John Jay. Professor Meeropol was one of the many supports of Kushner who was not impressed by the Executive Committee’s special meeting, “What was missing from that meeting was an apology to Tony Kushner” He also said, “What matters is that this [CUNY] is a governing body of a higher institution and the point of a University is to explore critical thinking.”
Putting aside all the noteworthy accomplishments of Tony Kushner, Green nominated Kushner because of his “incredible generosity with his time with our [John Jay] students.” She explained that during John Jay’s lecture series Justice and Injustice in 1950’s America last spring, “Tony Kushner engaged with 1 on 1 conversation with at least 10 students for more than an hour after the event was over.”
Green also added that this was one of the many times Kushner has supported John Jay students, she goes on to explain, “Tony Kushner is one of the most invested intellectuals that I know who genuinely cares about the educational experiences of our [John Jay] students.”

In the spring of 2010 Kushner arranged for one of Green’s classes, Brooklyn of the Imagination, to have VIP backstage access of a show that they had watched that semester. But John Jay professors weren’t the only ones who were let down by the actions of the board. Professor Sandor John, an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Hunter College, was one of the Kushner supporters standing outside the CUNY headquarters. Professor John said, “Enough is enough! Give the Board of Trustees a dishonorable degree and a dishonorable discharge,” he persisted to then ask, “Who elected them anyway? CUNY should be run by elected representatives of faculty, student and workers.” This honorary degree will be Tony Kushner’s 16th award. In his letter in response to the CUNY Board of Trustees, Kushner wrote that he wasn’t told in advance that his willingness to accept an honorary doctorate from John Jay would “require my presence at a meeting to defend myself” and that he “accepted the kind offer of a degree from John Jay College not because I need another award, but because I was impressed with the students and teachers there — as I have always been impressed with CUNY teachers and students — and I wanted to participate in celebrating their accomplishment.” In a press release immediately following the special Executive Committee meeting on May 9th, President Jeremy Travis confirmed in a statement that “The John Jay faculty and I nominated Mr. Kushner to recognize his extraordinary artistic contributions to our culture.”

American Idol

American Idol

Every child has a dream to be a famous singer or TV star. Luckily, Pia Toscano was able to live both these dreams as an American Idol contestant, and although she has been voted off American Idol, her dreams have not yet ended.

“I always wanted to be on stage,” said Toscano. She attended dancing school and began dancing on stage at just two and a half years old. “When I was on stage dancing, I was the last one to leave the stage; they couldn’t get me off; they would have to pull me.”

Toscano began to sing when she was four-years-old, when her father realized that she had a really good pitch as she sang Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” in her living room. Toscano said that she always knew that she had a good voice, but that as she got older, she became shy and didn’t sing.

When she got to junior high school, rather than choosing to sing in the chorus, Toscano chose to join the band to play the flute. She said that one day while she was in the band practice room, she started singing the national anthem. Her band teacher realized that she had a really good voice and made her sing for every assembly and graduation from then on.

When Toscano was getting ready to graduate from junior high school, she auditioned for the performing arts schools and was accepted to LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts.

“It was all so much fun. We really did sing in the hallways and dance on the lunchroom tables like they do in the movies,” she said. “LaGuardia has opened up so many opportunities for me, and one of those opportunities was American Idol.”

“I was always a huge American Idol fan before I auditioned for the show,” Toscano said. She excitedly added, “I even had Kelly Clarkson’s chunky blonde highlights when I was a teenager.”

She auditioned the first time for American Idol when it was in its fifth season. Toscano was eliminated before she was able to make it to Hollywood to meet the celebrity judges. This did not discourage her, though; she auditioned for seasons six, seven, and eight. Of the four seasons, Toscano was able to make it to Hollywood for one of the four seasons but was eliminated by Simon Cowell.

Toscano said that she got a little discouraged after all the eliminations, so she did not audition for season 9, and she wasn’t planning on auditioning for season 10. But when it was time for the auditions for season 10, Toscano’s mother told her that she could have another shot because there was a new panel of judges. Toscano auditioned.

“The previous four eliminations were a blessing in disguise for me; they prepared me for season 10,” said Toscano.

She came a long way in season 10. Toscano made it into the top eight contestants before her shocking elimination, which she said took her a “little by surprise.” Toscano, though, said that she had a feeling that she was going to be in the bottom three. “I felt it in my stomach,” she said. “I felt that my dream was coming to an end.” Just as dreams are misunderstanding, so was Toscano’s elimination.

Toscano said doesn’t exactly know why she was voted off the show. “You know, the show isn’t all about singing. It’s also about performing, and I was never fully comfortable on stage. I had to overcome my nerves every single week. I got butterflies every time I sang,” she said. “I’m such a perfectionist. I wanted to hit every note and sometimes I would get too inside my head and it would defeat me.”

Although at her moment of defeat Toscano thought her dream was over and that her journey was coming to an end, her journey wasn’t really ending.

Her elimination has attracted so much publicity and she has learned how many fans she truly has. “The day after elimination, I had 30,000 new twitter followers!” she said. “I lived in a bubble while I was on American Idol. I had no idea how many people supported me!” Toscano said that after the elimination she was feeling “pretty down” and that she was trying to stay positive. “The support was overwhelming and beautiful. I couldn’t have asked for things to work out any better—it really put a positive spin on a negative situation,” she said.

Toscano has other good things going for her too. She has the American Idol Tour coming up, and she has been performing on shows such as “Regis and Kelly,” “Ellen,” “Late Nite” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Not only does she have the tour and show appearances, but she also has the songs that she sang on American Idol on iTunes.

There have been rumors that Toscano has signed a record deal with Interscope Records, but she confirmed this as a rumor. “I really haven’t had time to do anything,” she said. “I’ve been so busy. My main focus is the tour.”

After the tour, Toscano hopes to record her own album and to go on her own tour. She also dreams to attend an awards show someday.

“I want to have the same impact on little girls that Kelly Clarkson had on me,” Toscano said.

“Beyond the Darkness” Review

movie theater doors

Image by gail des jardin via Flickr

Love makes people do crazy things, but even crazy has a line that should not be crossed. “Beyond the Darkness” crosses that line quickly and often. Made in 1979 in Italy, Joe D’Amato, the director of the film, successfully took the desire to be with someone to a point of insanity that touches upon cannibalism and necrophilia.
The movie follows the main character Francesco, played by Kieran Canter, who cannot get over the fact that his fiancée died in a hospital bed right after making out with him. There’s a short moment where he actually made out with a dead woman, but the actions that happen afterwards make this seem innocent. Francesco, whose life’s calling was to become a taxidermist, decides to upgrade from stuffing dead animals to stuffing his dead fiancée. In order to stuff his dead fiancée, Francesco pays a visit to her grave after the funeral and digs her up. The rest of the movie revolves around Francesco torturing and killing random women, avoiding the suspicions of the police, and keeping a dead corpse of his fiancée in bed next to him. He does all of this to keep her around as long as he lives. His inability to let go of a dead woman is the premise of this entire movie.
“Beyond the Darkness” does have some moments that make you think. Francesco’s housekeeper Iris, played by Franca Stoppi, obsesses over Francesco throughout the movie, going as far as to help him dispose of the bodies (and by dispose, I mean either burning them or chopping up and placing the bodies in acid) and gives him physical attention (and by that I mean breast feeding him and massaging his procreation tool). The characters in “Beyond the Darkness” are demented enough to make anyone question what they are viewing. The psychotic journey that Francesco undergoes throughout the movie also gives off a sense of uneasiness because there are no clear moments that can be classified as the moment where Francesco snaps. After watching the entire movie, I believe that he was always psychotic, and that his fiancée was the only thing keeping him from going on a murderous rampage. Francesco’s habitual method of biting off and eating the flesh of his victims makes Mike Tyson’s infamous ear biting incident seem like nothing.
Every brutal and unnecessary murder that occurred in the movie was over the fact that an innocent women Francesco brought back to his villa for sex happened to notice a corpse in the bed next to them. For some reason, seeing a dead corpse made all of his victims scream in terror and randomly attack Francesco in an attempt to preserve their own lives. This movie reeks with a strange aura that makes me not even believe anything that I’m watching. This movie barely has any elements that can be realistic, aside from the fact that a twenty-two year old cannot get over his fiancée’s death. Even that scene is destroyed by the fact that he suckles on his housekeeper’s nipple the same day he kisses his fiancée for the last time. Any chance of possibly seeing this actually happening in real life is thrown out the window after the opening scenes of the movie.
“Beyond the Darkness” is extremely graphic, almost to a point of pointlessness. I doubt any viewer needs to see Francesco kill women brutally and get away with it better than O.J. Simpson did. If you’re the type of viewer that enjoys necrophilia, cannibalism, and graphic murders that would traumatize children, not only do I suggest this movie to you, but I also suggest that you speak to a peer counselor as soon as possible. This movie is not for people who cannot stand to see gore, violence, and bad movies.
